A few years ago we put together a list of all the European Cities we wanted to visit and that list included all the larger Scandinavian cities.
I had been to Copenhagen many years ago for work, and had taken a trip on the Hurtigruten in Norway in 2015 but that was really the extent of my travels in Scandinavia.
This year in August - one of the warmest months of the year seemed like the right time to visit and so I came up with the driving plan on the map above.
I used google maps to help me work out the driving distances to keep the hours on the road down, and spent lots of time researching stopping points too.... it all worked out quite well.
Stockholm - Örebro - Karlstad - Oslo - Gothenberg - Copenhagen - Malmo - Ystad - Kalmar - Stockholm - Helsinki
Day 1 arrive in Stockholm and spend the night
Day 2 drive from Stockholm to Örebro via lake Malaren
Day 3 drive from Örebro to Karlstad
Day 4 drive from Karlstad to Oslo
Day 5 Day in Oslo
Day 6 drive Oslo to Kosterhavets Nationalpark then after lunch drive on to Gothenberg
Day 7 drive Gothenburg to Copenhagen
Day 8 in Copenhagen
Day 9 drive Copenhagen to Ystad via Malmo
Day 10 drive from Ystad to Kalmar
Day 11 drive from Kalmar to to Stockholm 4h 52min (413km)
Day 12 fly to Helsinki
Day 13 take a boat to Tallin
Day 14 in Helsinki
Day 15 fly to Stockholm
Day 16 fly home.
Here are a few photos from the trip... I'll do more specific posts on the individual cities soon...
I was a great way to get a 'taster' of the cities... there are some places that I don't feel any need to go back to... Oslo for example, but Gothenburg I would definitely go back to for a weekend.
Tallin, was a beautiful city and I wish we had spent the night there, based on this we have now added the other Baltic Capital cities to our must visit list.
One thing I learnt on this trip was that I like 'old fashioned' paper maps... Just using the sat nav to drive to destinations doesn't leave a lot of room to get lost and stumble upon nice random places for a coffee break or lunch.... so, although I don't have another driving trip in the near future this is something I will remember to do next time.
